Hurdy Gurdy
The composers recurring vision of a carnival hurdy gurdy player sparks this unique and abstract interpretation of the life and music of Gustav Mahler. Using the letters and writings of Gustav and Alma Mahler, Miro's premiere show submerges you in old dreams and new realities as time is turned on its head in the spaces where Mahler's story intersects with our modern day. Featuring the music of Gustav Mahler as re-envisioned by Uri Caine and Pete Wyer.
Miro choreographer Amanda Miller and video artist Tobin Rothlein are joined by New York and Kassel (Germany) based choreographer Johannes Wieland in creating this evening length work.
Highlights from the Philadelphia Inquirer review of Hurdy Gurdy:
This piece by Miro Dance Theatre delivers a mix of visual and aural brilliance and distinct choreographic signatures. The evocation of the life, loves and creative thinking of composer Gustav Mahler conjures both torturous and giddy relationships in a palette of purple and silver, black and white.
In Millers choreography exquisite composite images abound...
Wieland's choreography for the final section sends dancing sparks flying with speed demon urgency...
Uri Caine and Peter Wyer's brilliant adaptations of Mahler orchestral and choral works slide naturally from traditional versions into such contemporary forms as klezmer and jazz.
