Things to do: August
Posted August 29th, 2008#1 - Live Arts Festival! Since we aren't performing this Summer, we will be checking out as much new stuff as we can. Our suggestion: if it looks interesting to you, check it out! We plan to definitely catch Jan Fabre's Another Sleepy Dusty Delta Day, Miro hosted and participated in a Fabre workshop at Miro Studio this year, and his work is always unpredictable, smart, outragous, and something to talk about; Erica Saben in the IN FLUX show. Erica danced with us for Principles of Uncertainty at last year's festival, and competed in Cinco de Miro. She's new on the Philly scene and has interesting ideas on dance. We'll be heading out to West Philly to see Geoff Sobelle and Charlotte Ford's Flesh and Blood and Fish and Fowl. Geoff and Charlotte are our neighbors at the "Mech", the Girard College building where we both have studios, and we watched the early days of this shows development. We are excited to see the finished product. These are just a few and we will be seeing a lot more--make your own decisions, take risks, have fun!
Hurdy Gurdy heads to Atlanta
Posted August 29th, 2008Miro has been chosen to take part in a juried showcase at the Performing Arts Exchange. We will be remounting the company's acclaimed 2005 work, Hurdy Gurdy, a unique and abstract interpretation of the life and music of composer Gustav Mahler featuring music reinvisioned by Uri Caine and Pete M. Wyer, at the Rialto Center for the Arts in Atlanta, Georgia on September 25th. Miro was awarded a PennPAT Technical Assistance Grant to support our journey down south.

Accident Visions
By: Louise E. Wright, For The Bulletin
"My career is accidental," admits Tobin Rothlein, co-artistic director of Miro Dance Theatre. "It's hard to describe the path."
Finding a way to define himself proves just as difficult. Rejecting "filmmaker" and "performance artist," Mr. Rothlein finally settles on "video and visual artist."
"Miro through the Lens," this month's offering in the company's Open Studio series, focuses exclusively on Mr. Rothlein's work. In addition to screening early films rarely seen in Philadelphia, the program will take a look at experimental "video sketches," as well as works-in-progress.
Inspired by early music videos, Mr. Rothlein began making movies while still in middle school, using an old Super-8 camera that belonged to his grandfather. Putting a favorite tape on the 8-track player, he would project his efforts onto a sheet and enjoy those rare, magical moments when the visual and the music just happened to fuse.

Posted August 14th, 2008#1 - Ride your bike! it will make you feel good, and the MPG is infinite. For extra fun take the bike path along the Schulkyll River. You can get on at 25th and Locust and take it to the Art Museum and beyond. It is also a great way to get to the Miro Studio when Open Studio is back next month.
#2 - Get a vegan soft serve at B2, corner of Dickinson and Passyunk. Amanda calls it "cold wet icy icing" and its delicious (they have regular soft serve too).
