The Girard College Residency and Partnership

Since 2006 Miro has been engaged in an ongoing residency and partnership with Girard College. Girard College is a boarding school in North Philadelphia for academically capable students, grades 1-12, from families with limited financial resources, each headed by a single parent or guardian.

Through the Girard College residency and partnership, Miro provides the students of Girard College with a dance program that teaches conceptual and practical dance, choreography, and the creative process. In exchange, Girard provides Miro with dedicated studio and office space on their 43-acre campus in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Education & Outreach

Miro Dance Theatre offers a variety of master classes, choreographic workshops, interactive lecture demonstrations, and open rehearsals that support Miro's unique views on integrating contemporary dance, video, and visual art.

Teaching how dance and other mediums can be used to communicate ideas while focusing on the intrinsic unique qualities of the individual performer is an important component of our educational work. Miro reaches out to people of all backgrounds with residencies that focus on the creative process for both serious dance students and professionals as well as non-dancers of all ages. A standard residency format brings either one or two teachers into a community for up to ten days of custom-designed activities.

Residency activities are catered to the needs, interest, and experience levels of each community.

Master Classes share the expertise and movement philosophy of the Miro directors and dancers.

Current Master Classes:

  • Ballet Technique, Contemporary Technique, Yoga, Improvisation and Repertory*
    * teaches choreography from Miro productions to pre-professional, professional and college level students.

Lecture Demonstrations incorporate discussion, performance, and audience participation to engage the host community, and create excitement and interest in the process and performance.

Current Lecture Demonstrations:

  • Digital Duets a lecture demonstration focusing on the shared partnership of dance and video, the interaction of the live and recorded, and the importance of art over technology.
  • The New Classical a lecture demonstration focusing on ballet and classical technique in progressive and experimental dance work.
  • Visual innovations and design technologies, Led by James Clotfelter and Tobin Rothlein, this lecture demonstration focuses on new methodologies for meaningful, balanced uses of lighting and video design for the live arts.

Educational workshops: Workshops are based on company practice. A standard workshop begins with a class or warm up, followed by sessions working within the Miro Process - including a task-based creative session that gives the dancers opportunities to explore their own creativity within a mentored environment.

Open rehearsals: Modeled on our Open Studio Series, open rehearsals share our choreographic and design methods with host communities by inviting them to observe our process in the rehearsal studio. Question and answer sessions can be included.
